The 24 August Pistoia celebrates Saint Bartholomew, one of children's most loved festivals and a centuries-old tradition linked to’Abbey of San Bartolomeo in Pantano.
The party starts on the afternoon of 23 August with the rite of the anointing of Saint Bartholomewa small cross is drawn on the forehead of the faithful, accompanied by a prayer for protection from evil. The rite represents the symbolic moment that marks the beginning of the celebrations.
Why is Saint Bartholomew's Day children's festival?
San Bartolomeo is known in Pistoia as the children's party thanks to a very ancient tradition. According to legend, in fact, Saint Bartholomew has the ability to protecting the little ones from fears and evils, which is why, on his feast day, families take their children to receive the anointing at the Abbey of San Bartolomeo in Pantano.
From this tradition also comes the ancient nickname from Pistoia “sambartolomei”, used to describe lively and mischievous children. Over time, the occasion has evolved into a proper festival dedicated to children, consisting of sweets, games, market stalls and fun for the whole family.
The famous "Crown of Saint Bartholomew"
A tradition much loved by children is the Crown of St Bartholomew. It is a kind of necklace made with large shortcrust pastry biscuits called “Pippi”, interspersed with sugared almonds, sweets and chocolates.
The crown is placed round the children’s necks and, of course, it can be eaten! It’s a traditional specialities from Pistoia and one of the festival’s most recognisable symbols.
The festival and the market stalls
Around Piazza San Bartolomeo, stalls are being set up stalls selling sweets, toys and festive items. There are also activities and entertainment designed especially for children and families.
